Purpose and Objectives
The Colorado Herpetological Society was started in 1972 in Denver, Colorado, as a non-profit group dedicated to:
- educating the membership on the natural history, conservation and captive husbandry of reptiles and amphibians.
- educating the public about the importance of reptiles and amphibians in our world.
- improve the public image of reptiles and amphibians.
- educate the young to appreciate the wonder and beauty of all natural life, especially reptiles and amphibians so that our world will continue to have herpetologists and amateurs who will study and care for our worlds reptiles and amphibians.
In recent years, the group has also become more actively involved in:
- placing unwanted herps in new homes through our adoption program.
- face to face education of Denver-area children through fun and educational presentations.
- including more information for its members regarding veterinary care and current scientific studies.
Meetings
The CHS holds meetings for the general membership, every third Sunday of the month (except December), at 6:00 PM, in the Gates Education Center at the Denver Zoo.
During these meetings, the membership is presented with updates on club business and an educational presentation on any of a variety of subjects relating to herpetology. These presentations are given by scholars, veterinarians, professional herpetologists, amateur herpetoculturists, and others from many walks of life.
Directions to the Gates Center:
The Denver Zoo is located on 23rd Avenue between York Street and Colorado Boulevard. From the Zoo's main entrance:
- Go to the 2nd level of the parking garage (one level down from the main entrance level) and take the stairs on the south side up to the Gates Center.
- Tell the security guard at the gate that you are there for the Colorado Herpetological Society meeting.
- The entrance is on the west side of the Gates Center. We are scheduled to meet in the Johnson Room on the second floor. Stairs and elevator are at the back (east side) of the building.
The meetings are open to the public and are free of charge.
The Board of Directors holds their board meeting on the first Friday of every month (including December) at 7:30 PM. These meetings are open to all members. Contact a Board Member for location.
