Reprinted from the Toledo Herpetological Society newsletter, Vol.13, No.3, March 2002.
Common Name:
Carpet Python
Scientific Name:
Morelia spilotes variegata

Up to 13 feet, average is 6.5 feet
Description:
Shades of brown, buff, and gray. Rather slender bodied.
Range:
Australia, except the western quarter, S. Victoria, and New Guinea.
Habitat:
From wet forest to scrubland to semi-desert. May be arboreal or terrestrial. Nocturnal or crepuscular, hide in burrows during the day.
General Care:
Need at least a 4' x 2' x 3' cage with limbs to climb. Keep temperature at 80°F during the day, and 70°F at night. Can drop these temperatures by 5°F during winter seasons.
Humidity:
Require medium humidity, so they can be misted occasionally. Always provide a water bowl that the snake can fit into.
Feeding:
Feed pre-killed, appropriately sized mice and rats.
Reproduction:
Coil around eggs to incubate them. Do not disturb gravid females.
Temperament:
Can be quick, jerky, or nippy. With enough attention and handling they make great pets.
